Wilbur Wright
Co-inventor of the first successful powered airplane; pioneered controlled flight
Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912) was an American aviation pioneer and engineer who revolutionized transportation and human capability. Born in Indiana, Wilbur and his brother Orville worked as bicycle manufacturers before turning their attention to the problem of flight. Through systematic experimentation with wind tunnels and gliders, they developed the three-axis control system that made stable, controlled flight possible. On December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur piloted their Wright Flyer in the first sustained, controlled, powered heavier-than-air flight in history, lasting 12 seconds and covering 120 feet. This achievement fundamentally transformed human civilization and opened the era of aviation. Despite initial skepticism from the scientific establishment, the Wright brothers' success sparked a global aviation revolution. Wilbur died of typhoid fever at age 45, but his legacy as a co-founder of modern aviation remains unparalleled, with the Wright brothers recognized as among history's greatest innovators and engineers.
