Virgil Thomson

Virgil Garnett Thomson (November 25, 1896 – September 30, 1989) was an American composer, critic, organist, and conductor who made significant contributions to 20th-century classical music. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Thomson studied composition and developed a distinctive style that incorporated American vernacular music with modernist techniques. He became famous for his operas, including Four Saints in Three Acts (with text by Gertrude Stein) and The Mother of Us All, which broke conventional operatic traditions. Thomson was also a renowned music critic, serving as the music critic for the New York Herald Tribune from 1940 to 1954, where he became known for his witty, incisive reviews and championing of American composers. As a conductor, he recorded extensively and promoted contemporary classical music. His compositional style is characterized by simplicity, directness, and incorporation of hymns, folk melodies, and popular music. Thomson's influence extended beyond composition to music journalism and criticism—his collected criticism and essays provide valuable insight into 20th-century music and culture. He lived to age 92 and remained active in the musical world until his death, leaving behind a legacy as a modernist composer who remained accessible and distinctly American.
