Former WBC and WBA light middleweight boxing champion
Juan Manuel Díaz, professionally known as Vinny Paz (born December 16, 1964), is a Puerto Rican-American professional boxer who became one of the most formidable light middleweight champions of the 1980s and 1990s. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Paz rose to prominence during an era of exceptional boxing talent and established himself as a warrior in the ring through his aggressive fighting style, strong chin, and remarkable heart. He captured the WBC and WBA light middleweight titles and successfully defended his championships against numerous challengers throughout his reign. Paz is perhaps best known for his trilogy of fights with fellow champion Ray Leonard in 1990, which included a controversial split decision loss, and his subsequent comeback and victories in the mid-1990s. Despite suffering a severe eye injury that threatened his career, Paz made a notable comeback, demonstrating exceptional courage and determination. His longevity in professional boxing, spanning over two decades, reflects his skill and conditioning. Paz fought some of the era's greatest fighters including Héctor Camacho, Terry Norris, and Carlos De León. Though not always in the mainstream spotlight, Paz's contributions to boxing history and his status as a two-time world champion solidify his legacy in the sport.

“A casual, spirited English diminutive of Vincent, Vinny carries youthful energy and down-to-earth charm. The -y ending creates a friendly, accessible persona while maintaining the underlying strength of its Latin root (meaning 'conquering').”
