Vincent van Gogh

Post-Impressionist painter, Starry Night, revolutionary modern art

Biography

Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 30, 1853 – July 29, 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose revolutionary approach to color, form, and brushwork profoundly influenced the trajectory of modern art. Born in Groningen, Netherlands, van Gogh initially pursued a career as a Protestant missionary before turning to art in his late twenties. He moved to Paris in 1886 and immersed himself in the avant-garde art scene, developing his distinctive style characterized by bold, expressive brushstrokes and vibrant color combinations. Van Gogh's most productive period came during his time in southern France, particularly in Arles and Saint-Rémy, where he created iconic works including Starry Night, Sunflowers, and The Bedroom. Despite his extraordinary talent, van Gogh struggled with severe mental health issues throughout his life, leading to a tragic suicide at age 37. Ironically, his work gained recognition and appreciation only after his death. His legacy as a pioneer of Expressionism and his influence on 20th-century art cannot be overstated; he fundamentally changed how artists approached color, emotion, and the relationship between artist and canvas. Today, van Gogh is celebrated as one of the most important figures in art history, with his works among the most recognizable and valued paintings globally.
