Veronica Franco

Veronica Franco (1546–1591/1596) was a celebrated Venetian courtesan and writer who became one of the most prominent and influential women of the Italian Renaissance. Born in Venice during its Golden Age, Franco rose to prominence in the highly stratified world of Venetian society, where she distinguished herself not merely as a courtesan but as an intellectual and artist. Unlike many women of her era, Franco published poetry and maintained correspondence with notable literary and political figures, establishing herself as a patron of the arts and a woman of considerable learning. She famously defended her profession and her rights in writing, notably in response to attacks against her reputation, and engaged in legal disputes to maintain her independence and property rights—remarkable assertions of agency for a woman in the 16th century.
