Voice actress in classic Disney films; Aunt Sarah in Lady and the Tramp
Verna Felton (1890–1966) was an American actress and voice actress whose career spanned nearly seven decades, making her one of the earliest and most prolific voice actresses in animation history. Born in Salina, Kansas, Felton began her career in silent films and theater before transitioning to radio and eventually animation voice work. She became a favorite of Walt Disney, lending her distinctive voice to numerous characters in classic animated features, most famously as Aunt Sarah, the antagonistic character in "Lady and the Tramp" (1955). Her other notable voice roles included the Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella" (1950) and Flora in "Sleeping Beauty" (1959). Felton was known for her ability to portray both warm, grandmotherly characters and imperious, villainous roles with equal skill. Beyond her Disney work, she appeared in numerous live-action films and television programs throughout her career. Felton's contributions to voice acting were groundbreaking, establishing conventions and techniques that influenced generations of voice performers. Her work remains beloved by audiences and is studied as foundational to the art of voice acting in animation.
