Van Gogh
Post-Impressionist painter; 'Starry Night'; revolutionized modern art
Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 30, 1853 – July 29, 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work profoundly influenced modern art, despite his lack of recognition during his lifetime. Born in Groot-Zundert, a small village in Brabant, Van Gogh initially pursued a career in theology before turning to painting in his mid-twenties. He developed his distinctive style characterized by bold, expressive brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and emotional intensity, creating masterpieces such as 'The Starry Night,' 'Sunflowers,' and 'The Night Café.' Though he created over 2,100 artworks in just a decade, Van Gogh struggled with severe mental illness, poverty, and social isolation, selling only one painting during his lifetime. His relationship with fellow artist Paul Gauguin ended dramatically when he mutilated his own ear. Despite these hardships, his letters reveal a deeply philosophical and passionate artist committed to capturing human emotion and natural beauty on canvas. Van Gogh died by suicide at age 37, but his legacy has grown exponentially, making him one of history's most celebrated and influential artists, fundamentally reshaping how art could express inner psychological states.

Thinking about the name
Van
Dutch origin
“A short, powerful name with Dutch/Flemish roots meaning 'of' or 'from,' historically used as a prefix in family names like 'van der Berg.' As a standalone given name, Van is minimalist and modern, gaining popularity in English-speaking countries. It conveys simplicity, strength, and understated sophistication.”
