Tor Johnson
B-movie and horror film actor, professional wrestler, cult cinema icon
Tor Johnson (September 19, 1907 – May 12, 1963) was a Swedish-American professional wrestler turned character actor who became a cult icon of B-movies and low-budget horror films. Standing 6'3" and weighing over 300 pounds, Johnson's imposing physical presence made him ideal for monster and henchman roles in 1950s-60s cinema. He is most famous for his collaboration with director Ed Wood, appearing in the cult classic 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' (1959) as the reanimated Inspector Clay. Johnson's career spanned professional wrestling during the 1930s-40s and film appearances in numerous creature features and science fiction B-movies. Despite the low budgets and often campy nature of his films, Johnson became a beloved figure in horror cinema history, representing the golden age of practical effects and creature design. His distinctive appearance and stoic delivery have made him a lasting reference point in discussions of cult cinema and 1950s popular culture.

Tor
Scandinavian origin
“A Scandinavian short form derived from Tor/Thor, the Norse god of thunder and strength, whose name means 'thunder' in Old Norse. Tor is a minimalist, powerful name favored in Scandinavian cultures, conveying strength, divine protection, and natural force. The name balances mythological gravitas with modern simplicity.”
