Tom Petty

Tom Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was an American rock musician and singer-songwriter who became one of the most influential and commercially successful rock artists of the late 20th century. Beginning his career in the late 1970s, Petty formed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair, and drummer Stan Lynch. Together, they created some of rock and roll's most enduring and beloved songs, characterized by Petty's distinctive voice, memorable melodies, and lyrics that blended personal introspection with universal themes of freedom, love, and resilience. Albums such as 'Damn the Torpedoes' (1979) and 'Full Moon Fever' (1989) achieved multi-platinum success, while hit singles like 'Free Fallin',' 'I Won't Back Down,' and 'Learning to Fly' became rock radio staples and cultural touchstones. Petty's songwriting showcased an ability to craft accessible yet substantive rock songs with emotional depth. Beyond his band work, he released successful solo albums and collaborated with numerous artists, including a supergroup with Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and George Harrison. Petty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
