Timothy Leary
Psychologist, LSD advocate, counterculture icon, 'Turn on, tune in, drop out'
Timothy Francis Leary (October 22, 1920 – May 31, 1996) was an American psychologist and writer who became one of the most controversial and influential figures of the 1960s counterculture. Born in Massachusetts, Leary earned a doctorate in psychology and initially worked as a conventional clinical psychologist. His trajectory changed dramatically after he participated in psilocybin mushroom experiments in Mexico in 1961, an experience that led him to become a vocal advocate for the therapeutic and consciousness-expanding potential of psychedelic drugs, particularly LSD. At Harvard University, Leary conducted controversial experiments with psychedelic substances that eventually led to his dismissal from the university. He became a prominent countercultural spokesperson, coining the phrase "Turn on, tune in, drop out," which became a rallying cry for the psychedelic generation. Leary's advocacy for LSD and other hallucinogens made him both celebrated and reviled—praised by some as a visionary explorer of consciousness and condemned by others as irresponsible and dangerous. His ideas influenced popular culture, music, and attitudes toward drugs and spirituality. Despite his notoriety, Leary was also a serious theorist of human potential and consciousness studies. His complex legacy reflects ongoing debates about drugs, consciousness, and the boundaries between science and ideology.

Thinking about the name
Timothy
Greek origin
“From the Greek Timotheos, meaning 'one who honors God' or 'one who respects the divine.' Timothy has been a steadily favored name in Christian cultures since the apostolic era, when Paul wrote epistles to Timothy. It conveys intelligence, reliability, and spiritual depth while remaining accessible and classically timeless.”
