Tim Berners-Lee
Inventor of the World Wide Web, founder of W3C, computer scientist
Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee (born 1955) is a British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web, one of humanity's most transformative technologies. Born in London to a family of mathematicians and computer scientists, Berners-Lee studied physics at Queen's College, Oxford before beginning his career as a software engineer. In 1989, while working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland, Berners-Lee developed the foundational concepts and technology for the World Wide Web, including HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), HTML (HyperText Markup Language), and the URI (Uniform Resource Identifier). His invention addressed the challenge of information sharing among researchers across different computers and institutions. Remarkably, Berners-Lee made his invention freely available to the world, refusing to patent it, thereby enabling its universal adoption and transformative impact. This decision proved instrumental in the Web's explosive growth and democratization of information access. Berners-Lee continued advancing web standards through his role at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which he founded and directs, ensuring the Web's continued development and openness. Beyond his technical contributions, he has been a vocal advocate for web accessibility, privacy protection, and decentralization. Berners-Lee received numerous honors including a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. His invention fundamentally reshaped global communication, commerce, and society, making him arguably the most consequential technologist of the late twentieth century.

Thinking about the name
Tim
Greek origin
“A short form of Timothy, derived from the Greek Timotheos, meaning 'honoring God' or 'one who honors.' Tim became a standalone classic through its everyday practicality and friendly warmth. The name avoids stuffiness while retaining dignity, making it a perennial favorite for boys who grow into thoughtful men.”
