Tessa Jowell

Tessa Jane Jowell, Baroness Jowell (September 17, 1947 – May 13, 2023) was a British Labour politician and one of the most prominent female figures in British politics during the New Labour era. Born in Stoke-on-Trent, she studied philosophy at university before becoming a social worker and policy analyst. As Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown (1997-2010), Jowell oversaw the successful bid for the 2012 London Olympics and championed significant investment in British culture and arts. She was instrumental in modernizing media regulation and expanding public broadcasting. After stepping down from the Department, she served as MP for Dulwich and West Norwood until 2015. Later in life, she ran for Mayor of London in 2016 but was defeated by Sadiq Khan. Jowell was known for her accessibility, warm demeanor, and commitment to public service. She continued to advocate for mental health awareness and women's empowerment until her death from cancer in 2023.
