Telly Savalas
Lt. Theo Kojak in 'Kojak'; distinctive bald head and lollipop
Telly Savalas (January 21, 1922 – January 22, 1994) was a Greek-American actor, singer, and producer who became one of television's most recognizable and beloved figures. Born Aristotelis Savalas in Garden City, New York, to Greek immigrant parents, he initially pursued a career in music and drama before transitioning to acting in his thirties. Savalas appeared in numerous films and television shows, but achieved legendary status through his portrayal of Lieutenant Theo Kojak in the CBS television series 'Kojak' (1973-1978), which became a cultural phenomenon and ran for five seasons with 118 episodes. His distinctive bald head, lollipop-sucking character, and gravelly voice became iconic symbols of 1970s television. Beyond Kojak, Savalas demonstrated impressive range, appearing in notable films including 'The Dirty Dozen' (1967), 'Battle of the Bulge' (1965), and 'Cannonball Run' (1981). He was also an accomplished singer, recording several albums and performing in nightclubs. Savalas's warm personality and distinctive presence made him a fixture in popular culture, and he remained active in entertainment until his death just one day after his 72nd birthday.
