Telly Savalas
Star of 'Kojak,' iconic 1970s television detective
Telly Savalas (January 21, 1922 – January 22, 1994) was a Greek-American actor and singer who became a television icon through his portrayal of the tough, intuitive New York detective Lieutenant Theo Kojak in the groundbreaking series 'Kojak' (1973-1978). Born Aristotle Savalas, he adopted the nickname 'Telly' early in his career, which became his professional name. Before achieving massive television success, Savalas had appeared in numerous films and built a reputation as a character actor with remarkable range, known for playing both villains and sympathetic roles. His signature bald head, which became his trademark, was actually the result of a practical decision during his early career. Beyond acting, Savalas was an accomplished singer, recording several albums and even achieving a minor hit with the novelty song 'Telly.' His catchphrase 'Who loves ya, baby?' became part of American popular culture. Savalas received a Golden Globe Award and multiple Emmy nominations, cementing his status as one of television's most beloved performers.

Telly
Germanic origin
“A casual, friendly diminutive of Tell that gained British cultural associations through television ('the telly'). Telly conveys warmth, informality, and approachability while maintaining a clear connection to its Germanic root. The name feels vintage-inspired yet perpetually relevant, appealing to parents seeking something unpretentious and charming.”
