Ted Kaczynski
Unabomber, mathematician, anti-technology activist
Theodore John 'Ted' Kaczynski (born May 22, 1942) is an American mathematician and former academic who became known as 'the Unabomber' after his 17-year bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others. Born to a middle-class family, Kaczynski was an intellectually precocious child who entered Harvard University at age 16 and later earned a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Michigan. He briefly worked as an assistant professor at UC Berkeley before withdrawing from academic life in 1969. Motivated by radical anti-technology and anti-industrialization ideology, Kaczynski carried out a sophisticated bombing campaign from a remote cabin in Montana between 1978 and 1995. He was captured after his published manifesto was identified through the efforts of his brother, David, who recognized his writing style and reported him to authorities. Kaczynski is currently serving a life sentence without parole. His case has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and academic studies examining the intersection of intelligence, mental health, radicalization, and violence. While his crimes are universally condemned, his manifesto has been analyzed as a critique of industrial society and has influenced various anti-technology movements. The case remains significant in discussions of lone-wolf terrorism and ideological violence.

Thinking about the name
Ted
Greek origin
“A classic short form of Theodore, derived from the Greek 'theos' (god) and 'doron' (gift), meaning 'gift of God.' Ted gained popularity as a standalone name in the early 20th century and carries a friendly, approachable charm while maintaining dignity. It's the name of presidents, beloved fictional characters, and everyman heroes, making it feel both timeless and personable.”
