Tamir Rice
Victim of police shooting that sparked national racial justice conversation
Tamir Estif Rice (June 25, 2002 – November 22, 2014) was a 12-year-old boy shot and killed by Cleveland police officer Timothy Loehmann on November 22, 2014. Rice was carrying a replica airsoft gun in a public park when someone called 911 reporting a person with a gun, though the caller mentioned it was 'probably fake.' Body camera footage showed that Loehmann shot Rice within seconds of arriving at the scene, without attempting to communicate or de-escalate the situation. Rice's death became a pivotal moment in the Black Lives Matter movement and national discourse on police use of force, particularly against Black youth and in situations involving non-lethal weapons. The case raised critical questions about police training, threat assessment, and the appropriate use of force when responding to reports involving minors and toy weapons. Though a grand jury declined to indict Loehmann, the case led to a $6 million settlement with Rice's family and sparked broader conversations about police reform and accountability. Tamir Rice's name became synonymous with activism against police brutality and racial injustice in America.
