Stephen Douglass

Stephen A. Douglass (1813–1861) was an influential American politician and U.S. Senator from Illinois during the critical decades leading up to the American Civil War. Known as the 'Little Giant' despite his short stature, Douglass was a master politician and orator who championed popular sovereignty as a solution to the slavery question—the idea that territorial settlers should decide slavery's status for themselves. His Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 opened those territories to potential slavery expansion, intensifying sectional tensions. Douglass is most remembered for his series of seven debates with Abraham Lincoln during the 1858 Illinois Senate race, which brought national attention to both men and clarified the fundamental divide over slavery's expansion. Though he won the Senate seat, Lincoln's performance elevated him to national prominence. Douglass ran against Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election but finished second. Despite his efforts to prevent secession and preserve the Union, he remained a loyal patriot after war broke out, though he died in 1861, just months into the conflict. His political legacy remains debated by historians, but his oratorical skills and role in shaping antebellum American politics are undisputed.
