Sonia Gandhi
President of Indian National Congress, influential Indian politician
Sonia Maino Gandhi (born December 9, 1946) is an Italian-born Indian politician who has served as the president of the Indian National Congress, one of India's oldest and most influential political parties. Born in Turin, Italy, she met Rajiv Gandhi, an Indian politician, and married him in 1968. After Rajiv's assassination in 1991, she gradually entered Indian politics and became the Congress party president in 1998, a position she held for 19 years until 2017. Under her leadership, the Congress party led the coalition government that brought Manmohan Singh to power as Prime Minister (2004-2014). Gandhi's political tenure has been characterized by efforts to modernize the party and promote inclusive economic growth policies benefiting India's poorest citizens. Though often described as reluctant about direct political office, she emerged as a powerful behind-the-scenes political force, making crucial decisions affecting India's governance. Her tenure witnessed major economic reforms and initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation. Gandhi's journey from Italy to becoming one of India's most powerful political figures represents the global nature of modern politics and the significant role women can play in shaping national destinies.

Thinking about the name
Sonia
Greek origin
“Derived from the Greek Sophia, meaning 'wisdom,' Sonia is a Russian and Eastern European diminutive that gained international popularity in the 20th century. The name balances intellectual grace with approachability, never feeling pretentious. It became associated with literary sophistication through works like Dostoevsky's novels.”
