Sibyl Colefax

Sibyl Colefax (1873-1950) was a trailblazing British interior decorator, designer, and society hostess who became one of the most influential figures in 20th-century interior design. Born Sibyl Halsey in London, she initially gained prominence as a celebrated hostess, entertaining London's cultural elite at her home in Chelsea. Recognizing her talent for creating beautiful interiors and her innate sense of style, she transitioned her passion into a professional career, founding the Sibyl Colefax Ltd. interior design firm in the 1920s. Her work was characterized by elegance, comfort, and an innovative blend of classic and contemporary elements. In 1938, she partnered with designer John Fowler to create Colefax and Fowler, which became one of the most prestigious and influential design firms in Britain. The firm was known for restoring grand country houses and creating sophisticated, livable interiors that balanced formality with intimacy.
