Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005) was an American politician and civil rights activist who broke multiple barriers in her groundbreaking political career. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Barbadian and Guyanese immigrant parents, Chisholm earned a degree in early childhood education and worked as a teacher before entering politics. In 1968, she became the first Black woman elected to Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district. During her fourteen years in Congress, she championed civil rights, women's rights, and social welfare programs, earning a reputation for fearlessness and principled advocacy. In 1972, Chisholm made history by becoming the first Black candidate to seek the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, advancing her campaign slogan 'Unbought and Unbossed.' Though she did not secure the nomination, her campaign demonstrated her commitment to challenging systemic inequalities and inspiring marginalized communities. Chisholm was known for her eloquence, intelligence, and refusal to be silenced, earning respect across political and social movements. Beyond electoral politics, she founded the National Political Congress of Black Women and remained an advocate for social justice throughout her life. Her legacy continues to inspire activists and political leaders working for equality and representation.
