Séraphine Louis

Séraphine Louis (1864–1942), known professionally as Séraphine de Senlis, was a French intuitive or outsider artist whose mysterious, visionary paintings captivated early twentieth-century modernists. Born in Arsy, in the Oise region of northern France, Séraphine worked as a domestic servant and cleaner for much of her life while secretly developing her artistic practice. She was largely self-taught, creating intricate, densely patterned paintings featuring exuberant botanical forms, cosmic imagery, and religious symbolism rendered in rich, vibrant colors. Her work emerged from a deeply personal spiritual vision rather than formal artistic training or contemporary movements. German collector and art dealer Wilhelm Uhde discovered her work around 1912 and became her champion, helping to exhibit and promote her paintings in avant-garde circles. Séraphine's work was celebrated by modernist artists and critics who admired her unique vision and uninhibited imagination. However, her later life was marked by mental illness, poverty, and tragedy. She spent her final years in a psychiatric hospital, where she died in obscurity. Séraphine has since been rediscovered and reappraised, her paintings now recognized as masterpieces of visionary art. Her story—of an obscure servant whose inner world produced extraordinary beauty—has inspired books, films, and exhibitions celebrating intuitive genius.
