Sara Palin
Governor of Alaska; 2008 VP nominee; political commentator
Sarah Louise Palin (February 11, 1964 – present), commonly known as Sarah Palin, is an American politician and political commentator who served as the ninth Governor of Alaska from 2006 to 2008 and was the Republican Party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in 2008, running alongside presidential candidate John McCain. Born in Sandpoint, Idaho and raised in Wasilla, Alaska, Palin worked as a sports reporter and commercial fisherman before entering politics, serving on the Wasilla city council and as the city's mayor. As Governor, she gained recognition for her environmental policies and efforts to increase oil revenue for Alaska. Her selection as McCain's running mate in 2008 made her a significant figure in that presidential campaign, making her the first Alaska-born major party nominee for national office and the second female nominee for Vice President in U.S. history. Though the McCain-Palin ticket lost to Barack Obama, Palin's campaign significantly impacted American politics and media. After leaving office in 2009, she became a prominent political commentator and media personality, appearing on Fox News and other platforms. Palin has remained a divisive but influential figure in Republican politics, known for her populist approach and combative style. Her political career and media presence have made her one of the most recognized political figures of the 21st century, though assessments of her impact remain highly polarized along partisan lines.
