Samuel Edward Ramey (March 28, 1942 – March 21, 2023) was an American bass-baritone opera singer who enjoyed one of the most distinguished careers in modern opera. Born in Colby, Kansas, Ramey trained at the University of Kansas and went on to become one of the most celebrated bass-baritone singers of his era. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1984 and became a principal baritone with the company, performing in more than 150 productions over his tenure.
