Samuel Butler

Samuel Butler (1835–1902) was an English author, satirist, painter, and composer whose incisive wit and social criticism made him one of the most distinctive literary voices of the Victorian era. Born into a clerical family, Butler initially trained for the ministry before rejecting religious orthodoxy—a rejection that would inform much of his satirical work. His 1872 novel 'Erewhon' (an anagram of 'Nowhere') was a utopian satire that cleverly critiqued Victorian society, technology, and social institutions through an imaginative inverted world. The novel demonstrated Butler's gift for sharp social commentary wrapped in imaginative storytelling. His masterpiece, 'The Way of All Flesh' (published posthumously in 1903), is an autobiographical novel that devastatingly critiques Victorian family structures, religious hypocrisy, and class conventions. The novel influenced generations of writers and remains a cornerstone of English literature.
