Biography

Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (April 28, 1937 – December 30, 2006) was an Iraqi politician and military officer who served as the fifth President of Iraq from 1979 until his overthrow in 2003. Born in Tikrit, he rose through the ranks of the Ba'ath Socialist Party, becoming known for his ruthless consolidation of power. His presidency was characterized by brutal authoritarianism, suppression of dissent, and numerous regional conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) and the invasion of Kuwait in 1990, which led to the Gulf War. Saddam's regime employed chemical weapons against Iran and Kurdish populations, committing war crimes documented by international observers. Following the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, he went into hiding but was eventually captured in December 2003. Tried for crimes against humanity, Saddam was executed by the Iraqi government on December 30, 2006. His legacy remains deeply controversial and tragic, representing one of the 20th century's most oppressive regimes and serving as a cautionary example of dictatorship's humanitarian costs.
