Matthew Ryan Phillippe (born September 10, 1974) is an American actor, producer, and director who rose to prominence in the 1990s. Born in New Castle, Delaware, Phillippe began his career in television before achieving film success. He is best known for his role as Sebastian Valmont in the cult classic Cruel Intentions (1999), where he starred opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon. Other notable film roles include Flags of Our Fathers (2006) and W. (2008). On television, Phillippe has had significant roles in Invasion (2005) and the thriller series Secrets and Lies (2015-2020).
