Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio, and became the 19th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. Hayes's path to the presidency was marked by the highly controversial 1876 election against Samuel Tilden, which resulted in an electoral dispute so contentious it nearly destabilized the nation. An electoral commission appointed to resolve the conflict awarded the presidency to Hayes in a decision widely viewed as a political compromise that effectively ended Reconstruction and returned power to Southern Democrats.
