Ruth Westheimer
Sex educator, media personality, pioneer of sexual health discourse
Ruth Karola Siegel Westheimer (June 4, 1928 – August 12, 2022) was a German-American sex educator and media personality who became a cultural icon by bringing candid discussions of sexuality to mainstream American media. Born in Frankfurt am Main to a Jewish family, Westheimer survived the Holocaust and eventually emigrated to the United States, where she earned a doctorate in family therapy. Beginning in 1980 with a radio show on WYNY-FM in New York, Westheimer became famous for her warm, non-judgmental approach to discussing sexual health and relationships with callers from all backgrounds. Her infectious laugh, thick accent, and approachable demeanor made her an unprecedented public figure in discussing topics previously considered taboo. She went on to host television programs including "The Dr. Ruth Show" and published numerous best-selling books on sexuality and relationships. Westheimer's influence extended her role as an educator; she became a symbol of sexual liberation and health education, breaking through cultural and generational barriers to foster frank, compassionate dialogue about human sexuality. Her legacy includes transforming public discourse around sexual health and demonstrating how education and humor could address sensitive topics. She remained active in media and education until her death at age 94, having fundamentally changed American attitudes toward sexual education and discourse.

Ruth
Hebrew origin
“Derived from Hebrew 'ruth' meaning 'friend' or 'companion,' Ruth is a biblical name of profound spiritual significance—the Moabite woman who became the great-grandmother of King David and is celebrated for her loyalty, compassion, and redemption. The name carries both biblical weight and timeless femininity, remaining steadily beloved across generations.”
