Ruperto Chapi y Lorente (March 27, 1851 – March 25, 1909) was a prominent Spanish composer who became one of the most important figures in the development and popularization of zarzuela, Spain's distinctive operetta genre. Born in Villena, Alicante, he showed early musical talent and studied at the Madrid Conservatory, where he later became a professor. Chapi composed over 150 works during his lifetime, establishing himself as a master of musical theater with accessible melodies and engaging plots that resonated with Spanish audiences. His zarzuelas, which blended spoken dialogue with music and often satirized contemporary social issues, were performed extensively throughout Spain and Spanish-speaking regions. Notable works include 'La Tempestad,' 'Margarita la Tornera,' and 'El Rey de la Zamacueca.'
