Rolf Harris

Children's TV presenter, novelty musician, animal advocate

Biography

Rolf Harris (1930–2022) was an Australian-British entertainer, musician, painter, and television personality who became a major figure in British popular culture for over six decades. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Harris moved to Britain in the 1950s and quickly found success as a television presenter, comedian, and musician. He was best known for his long-running children's program 'Animal Hospital' (1994–2006), which showcased his genuine passion for wildlife and veterinary medicine, and for novelty songs like 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport' that became international hits. Harris was also a talented painter and appeared regularly on art instruction television programs. However, his legacy became severely tarnished in 2014 when he was convicted of serious indecent assaults committed decades earlier. He served prison time and was largely erased from British cultural memory, representing one of entertainment's most dramatic falls from grace. Despite his later crimes, his earlier contributions to children's television and entertainment in the 1970s and 1980s were once considered iconic.
