Rishi Sunak
UK Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer
Rishi Sunak (born May 12, 1980) is a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party from September 2022 to July 2024, making him the youngest British Prime Minister in over 200 years. Born in Southampton to parents of Indian heritage, Sunak studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Lincoln College, Oxford, and later earned an MBA from Stanford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Before entering politics, he worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs and as an investment manager at TCI Fund Management. Elected to Parliament in 2015 representing Richmond in North Yorkshire, Sunak rose rapidly through Conservative ranks, serving as Chief Secretary to the Treasury and later as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Boris Johnson during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he oversaw the government's economic response including the Furlough Scheme. His tenure as Chancellor was marked by substantial government spending to support the economy during the pandemic. As Prime Minister, he served during a period of significant political turbulence within the Conservative Party, following the resignation of Liz Truss. Despite efforts to stabilize the party and economy, his premiership was characterized by declining poll numbers and internal party divisions. Following electoral losses, he stepped down as party leader in 2024. Sunak's career represents modern British politics' increasing diversity and his personal financial wealth distinguished him among recent Prime Ministers.
