Rex Stout

Rex Todhunter Stout (December 1, 1886 – October 27, 1975) was an American mystery writer whose prolific career and innovative characters fundamentally shaped American detective fiction. Born in Noblesville, Indiana, Stout developed diverse career interests before dedicating himself to writing, which he pursued with remarkable consistency and productivity. His most enduring creation was Nero Wolfe, an eccentric, brilliant private detective who became one of literature's most distinctive and beloved characters. Beginning with 'Fer-de-Lance' (1934), Stout wrote 33 Nero Wolfe novels and numerous short stories featuring the orchid-loving detective and his assistant Archie Goodwin, creating one of literature's most successful character partnerships. Stout's detective fiction transcended typical genre conventions—his novels combined ingenious plotting, sophisticated dialogue, and complex characterization with social consciousness and intellectual substance.
