Reggie White

Hall of Fame NFL defensive end, 198 career sacks, defensive pioneer

Biography

Reginald Howard White (December 19, 1961 – December 26, 2004) was an American professional football player and Hall of Famer universally recognized as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, White attended the University of Tennessee where he established himself as an exceptional defensive talent. His 15-season NFL career, primarily split between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, established new standards for excellence at the defensive end position. With 198 career sacks, White holds the NFL record and twice led the league in sacks. His physical attributes—standing 6'5" and weighing 300 pounds with exceptional speed and agility—revolutionized defensive end play, making him nearly impossible to block effectively. White was a 13-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, contributing significantly to the Packers' 1996 Super Bowl XXXI championship. Beyond his statistical dominance, White was respected for his technical mastery, leadership, and sportsmanship. He was known as 'The Minister of Defense' both for his dominant play and his deep Christian faith, which shaped his life and values. After his career, White became an ordained minister and advocate for numerous charitable causes. His tragically early death at age 43 shocked the sports world. White's legacy encompasses his unparalleled defensive dominance and his exemplary character both on and off the field.
