Reed Hastings
Netflix co-founder, streaming revolution pioneer
Reed Hastings (born October 8, 1960) is an American technology entrepreneur and philanthropist best known as the co-founder and former CEO of Netflix, one of the world's most influential media companies. After founding Pure Software in 1991, which he eventually sold for $750 million, Hastings co-founded Netflix in 1997 with Marc Randolph, initially as a DVD rental-by-mail service. His visionary decision to pivot Netflix toward streaming technology in 2007, when the company was still profitable through DVD rentals, proved transformative for the entire entertainment industry. Under Hastings' leadership, Netflix grew from a niche service to a global entertainment powerhouse with hundreds of millions of subscribers and a portfolio of acclaimed original content including 'The Crown', 'Stranger Things', and 'The Queen's Gambit'. His management philosophy emphasizing radical transparency and freedom within responsibility became influential in Silicon Valley culture. Beyond Netflix, Hastings has been a significant philanthropist, co-founding the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's education portfolio and supporting various educational reform efforts. His tenure at Netflix ended in 2024, but his impact on media distribution, technological innovation, and corporate culture remains profound and widely studied.

Thinking about the name
Reed
English origin
“Derived from the Old English 'hræd,' meaning 'to advise' or 'counsel,' Reed originally referred to someone who gave counsel or advice. The name also carries natural imagery, evoking the tall reed plants that grow by water, suggesting flexibility and resilience. It's a straightforward, masculine name that feels both literary and grounded, popular in contemporary naming for its simplicity and strength.”
