Raphael Holinshed
Author of Holinshed's Chronicles, major source for Shakespeare's plays
Raphael Holinshed (c. 1525–1580) was an English chronicler and author of Holinshed's Chronicles, one of the most important historical works of the Renaissance period. Originally published in 1577 with a second edition in 1587, the Chronicles provided a comprehensive account of the history of England, Scotland, and Ireland, drawing from numerous earlier sources and contemporary records. Holinshed's work became an invaluable resource for writers and scholars, most notably William Shakespeare, who drew extensively from it for his historical plays including 'Macbeth,' 'King Lear,' and the English history cycle. The Chronicles combined narrative history with detailed descriptions of customs, geography, and social conditions, offering readers a multifaceted view of British history. Though Holinshed was not the sole author—the work involved contributions from other scholars—he served as the principal editor and compiler, shaping the overall structure and vision of the project. His Chronicles represented an early attempt at comprehensive national history and set a standard for historical documentation. The work's influence on English literature, particularly drama, cannot be overstated, as it provided the narrative foundation for many of the most celebrated works in the English canon.

Thinking about the name
Raphael
Hebrew origin
“From the Hebrew 'Rephael,' meaning 'God heals,' Raphael is the name of one of the seven archangels in Judeo-Christian tradition. The name carries profound spiritual significance and has been borne by artists, philosophers, and leaders throughout history. It's both classically elegant and deeply meaningful, appealing to families valuing heritage and spiritual depth.”
