Ramon Mercader
Assassin of Leon Trotsky, Soviet NKVD agent
Ramon Mercader (1913–1978) was a Spanish communist and Soviet NKVD intelligence officer who carried out one of the 20th century's most infamous political assassinations. Born in Barcelona to a Catalan nationalist family, Mercader joined the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War before being recruited by Soviet intelligence. In 1940, operating under Stalin's orders, Mercader tracked Leon Trotsky, Stalin's exiled rival, to his compound in Coyoacán, Mexico City. On August 20, 1940, Mercader fatally wounded Trotsky with an ice axe concealed in a raincoat, killing the revolutionary theorist the following day. Mercader was immediately apprehended by Mexican authorities and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. He maintained his communist convictions throughout his incarceration, refusing to be used as a propaganda tool against the Soviet Union. Released in 1960, he was smuggled to Cuba and eventually settled in the Soviet Union, where he lived under an assumed name until his death. His assassination of Trotsky remains a controversial historical event symbolizing Stalinist repression of political rivals. Though rarely glorified today, Mercader remains a significant historical figure studied in contexts of Cold War history, assassination history, and Soviet espionage.

Ramon
Germanic origin
“From the Germanic 'ragin' (counsel) and 'mann' (man), Ramon means 'wise man' or 'counselor.' A stalwart of Spanish and Catalan tradition, Ramon was the name of multiple Catalan saints and remains a symbol of quiet strength, intellect, and spiritual grounding.”
