Pope Benedict XVI
Pope (2005-2013), theologian
Joseph Ratzinger, who became Pope Benedict XVI, was born in Bavaria in 1927 and served as the head of the Roman Catholic Church from 2005 until his unprecedented resignation in 2013. Before his election as Pope, Ratzinger had a distinguished career as a theologian, academic, and Cardinal, earning respect for his intellectual rigor and deep knowledge of Catholic doctrine. As Pope, Benedict XVI focused on defending traditional Catholic teachings while navigating contemporary challenges facing the Church, including the clergy abuse crisis and interfaith relations. His papacy was marked by efforts to strengthen Catholic identity and promote what he termed a "hermeneutic of continuity" with Vatican II teachings. His 2013 resignation shocked the world, as no pope had voluntarily stepped down since Gregory XII in 1415, making him the first pope in nearly 600 years to resign. After his retirement, he lived in Vatican City as Pope Emeritus, remaining a significant theological voice. Benedict XVI passed away in 2022 at age 95. His papacy and theological contributions have had lasting impact on contemporary Catholicism.
