Pius Adesanmi

Pius Adesanmi (February 20, 1967 – March 10, 2019) was a renowned Nigerian author, literary critic, and cultural commentator whose sharp essays and social commentary made him a significant figure in contemporary African intellectual life. Educated at universities in Nigeria and Canada, Adesanmi held academic positions across the globe, teaching African literature and cultural studies. His writing was characterized by wit, erudition, and unflinching critique of political corruption, social injustice, and cultural hypocrisy in Africa and the diaspora. Collections of his essays, including "Naija Jesus and Other Stories," demonstrated his ability to blend humor with serious social analysis. Beyond his literary work, Adesanmi was a vocal human rights advocate who used his platform to challenge authoritarian regimes and defend freedom of expression. He was also a mentor to younger writers and intellectuals across Africa. Tragically, Adesanmi died in the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash in March 2019, a loss deeply mourned by the African literary community. His legacy endures through his published works and his influence on a generation of African writers and thinkers committed to using literature as an instrument of social change.
