Phuong Khanh Nguyen was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and later moved to the United States where she pursued a career in modeling and pageantry. In December 2018, she was crowned Miss Universe 2018, defeating competitors from over 90 countries. Her victory was historically significant as she became the third Vietnamese woman to claim the Miss Universe title, following Anh Vũ (1992) and H'Hen Niê (2017). During her reign, Phuong represented Vietnam on the global stage, advocating for environmental conservation and women's empowerment.
