Philippe Petit
Tightrope walker, Twin Towers walk 1974
Philippe Petit (born 1949) is a French tightrope walker and street performer renowned for his audacious high-wire performances, most famously his unauthorized walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7, 1974. Born in Nemours, France, Petit became fascinated with tightrope walking as a child and spent years perfecting his craft and planning his most ambitious project. On a summer morning, Petit and an accomplice secretly installed a cable between the North and South towers of the World Trade Center, 1,350 feet above the ground. For 45 minutes, Petit walked, danced, and performed acrobatic feats on the wire, captivating crowds below and television audiences worldwide. He was arrested but became an international celebrity, and his act was documented in the 2008 Academy Award-winning film 'Man on Wire.' Beyond the Twin Towers exploit, Petit has performed high-wire walks across numerous landmarks worldwide, including Niagara Falls and the Brooklyn Bridge. His philosophy of art as an act of beauty and freedom, pursued outside commercial systems, has made him a cultural icon representing artistic courage and human achievement.
