Petra Kelly

Petra Karin Kelly (1947–1992) was a German-American political activist and founder of the German Green Party (Die Grünen), playing a pivotal role in establishing environmentalism as a major political force in Germany and Europe. Raised partly in the United States and Germany, Kelly became deeply committed to peace, environmentalism, and social justice from an early age. She was instrumental in bringing together diverse activist movements—environmental protection, nuclear disarmament, human rights, and anti-militarism—into a cohesive political platform. Kelly served in the German Bundestag from 1983 to 1990, championing green politics at the national level during crucial years of Cold War politics and environmental awakening.
