Persis Khambatta

Persis Khambatta (1948–1998) was a groundbreaking Indian-American actress, model, and cultural icon who achieved international recognition in an era when Asian representation in Western media was minimal. Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, Khambatta became the first woman of Indian origin to be crowned Miss India Universe in 1965, a victory that was significant both nationally and internationally. Her most famous role came in 1979 when she was cast as Lieutenant Ilia in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, a character that became iconic among science fiction fans and marked a milestone for Indian representation in major Hollywood productions. In the role, Khambatta famously had her head shaved as part of the character's alien design, a bold choice that demonstrated her commitment to her craft. Beyond her Hollywood work, she appeared in various films and television shows, working to break stereotypical casting barriers for actresses of Indian descent. Khambatta's career was curtailed by health issues later in life, and she passed away in 1998.
