Patricia Wald

Patricia McGowan Wald (born 1928) is an American federal judge, lawyer, and pioneering female jurist who became Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, one of the most influential appellate courts. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Wald attended Vassar and Yale Law School during an era when few women entered the legal profession. She worked in government, private practice, and public interest law, demonstrating versatility and commitment to diverse legal domains. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the D.C. Circuit Court, where she served with distinction for twenty years, eventually becoming Chief Judge. Wald is recognized for her thoughtful, scholarly approach to jurisprudence and her influential opinions on environmental law, administrative law, and constitutional questions. She has been particularly important in developing environmental law doctrine, bringing scientific rigor and public interest consideration to complex regulatory questions.
