Parrish Smith
DJ Jazzy Jeff, pioneering hip-hop producer and rapper
Parrish Smith (born September 2, 1965) is an American rapper and record producer better known by his stage name DJ Jazzy Jeff. He rose to prominence in the late 1980s as one half of the groundbreaking hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince alongside Will Smith. Known for his exceptional scratching skills and innovative production techniques, Smith helped define the sound of East Coast hip-hop during the genre's golden age. The duo released landmark albums including "Rock the House" (1987) and "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" (1988), which achieved platinum status without major radio play or music videos. After the group's dissolution, Smith embarked on a successful solo career, releasing albums and producing tracks for numerous artists. He was among the first hip-hop artists to challenge the Recording Industry Association of America regarding explicit content labeling. Smith's technical proficiency on the turntables and his production excellence have made him a respected figure in hip-hop culture. His influence extends beyond music to hip-hop's broader cultural and commercial impact, and he remains active in the industry as a producer and performer.
