Paddy Ashdown

Paddy Ashdown (born February 27, 1941) is a British politician, diplomat, and author who served as leader of the Liberal Democrats from 1988 to 1999, during which he significantly revitalized the party and expanded its electoral appeal. Born Jeremy John Durham Ashdown in New Delhi, India, he adopted the nickname 'Paddy' early in life. Before entering politics, Ashdown served as a Royal Marine officer and developed expertise in foreign policy and defense matters. As Liberal Democrat leader, he pioneered closer cooperation with the Labour Party, establishing 'Lib-Lab cooperation' that influenced British politics throughout the 1990s.
