Ouida

Ouida was the pen name of Marie Louise de la Ramée (January 1, 1839 – January 25, 1908), an English novelist and writer born in Bury, Lancashire. She adopted the pseudonym "Ouida" early in her career, derived from her childhood mispronunciation of her middle name "Louise." Beginning her writing career as a contributor to magazines, Ouida quickly gained fame for her romantic, dramatic novels that captivated Victorian readers. Among her most celebrated works are "Under Two Flags" (1867), a swashbuckling tale of military romance, and "A Dog of Flanders" (1872), a touching story about a boy and his dog that remains beloved worldwide. Though her novels were enormously popular with the reading public, literary critics of her time often disparaged her work as overly sentimental and melodramatic. Beyond her fiction, Ouida was a passionate and outspoken advocate for animal rights, remaining unmarried and dedicating much of her life to her numerous pets. She lived much of her later life in Italy, where she continued writing and championing various social causes. Her literary legacy reflects the Victorian era's fascination with romance and emotion, while her animal welfare activism predated modern animal rights movements.
