Otha Richard Turner
Mississippi Hill country blues harmonica player; blues traditionalist and performer
Otha Richard Turner (1907–2003) was an American blues harmonica player, singer, and composer who became a legendary figure in North Mississippi Hill country blues. Born in Gravel Springs, Mississippi, Turner developed a distinctive style playing harmonica and contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of Delta blues traditions. He founded and led the Otha Turner and the Kings of Rhythm group, which became well-known for energetic live performances and recordings. Turner's music bridged traditional blues with more contemporary sounds, and he continued performing actively into his nineties, becoming known as one of the last living links to early blues traditions. His influence extended to younger musicians and blues enthusiasts who sought to understand authentic Mississippi blues. Turner's longevity as a performer—spanning nearly a century—and his dedication to his craft made him an important cultural ambassador for blues heritage. His recordings and live performances documented crucial blues traditions that might otherwise have been lost, ensuring his legacy as a steward of American musical history.

Thinking about the name
Otha
Germanic origin
“A rare variant of Ota or Otto, rooted in Germanic 'Odo' meaning 'wealth' or 'property.' Otha has a short, punchy sound with a distinctly early 20th-century American flavor, suggesting practicality and grounded character.”
