Osiel Hernández Cervantes
Leader of the Gulf Cartel, founder of the Zetas
Osiel Hernández Cervantes (May 18, 1970 – present) is a Mexican organized crime boss who rose to prominence as the leader of the Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico's most powerful drug trafficking organizations. Born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Hernández began his criminal career in the late 1980s and quickly ascended through the ranks of the cartel due to his ruthlessness and strategic acumen. By the 1990s, he had consolidated control of the Gulf Cartel and expanded its operations across Mexico and into the United States, becoming infamous for his brutality and for establishing the Zetas, a paramilitary enforcement wing that would later become an independent criminal organization. His reign was marked by violent turf wars, widespread corruption of Mexican officials, and the expansion of methamphetamine trafficking. Hernández was captured by Mexican authorities in 1999 but escaped, only to be recaptured in 2003. He was subsequently extradited to the United States in 2007, where he was tried and convicted on drug trafficking charges. His legacy represents a significant chapter in the history of organized crime in North America and the broader drug war.
