Olympia Dukakis
Academy Award-winning actress, 'Moonstruck', theater founder
Olympia Dukakis (June 20, 1931 – May 1, 2021) was an American actress, director, and theater founder with an extraordinary career spanning over six decades. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, to a Greek-American family, Dukakis studied drama at Boston University and later founded the Whole Theatre Company in New Jersey, where she nurtured countless actors and directed numerous productions. Though she worked consistently in theater and television from the 1960s onward, she achieved mainstream recognition relatively late in her career when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at age 55 for her role as Rose Castorini in 'Moonstruck' (1987), opposite Cher and Nicolas Cage. Her portrayal of wise, spirited mothers and matriarchs became iconic, and she continued acting in films including 'Steele Magnolias' (1989), 'Look Who's Talking' (1989), and numerous television appearances. Dukakis was known for her warmth, authenticity, and ability to infuse characters with depth and humanity. Beyond acting, she remained committed to theater and teaching, mentoring younger actors and preserving the theatrical traditions she loved. Her legacy as a late-blooming star who achieved recognition through talent and persistence made her an inspiration to artists and audiences alike.

Thinking about the name
Olympia
Greek origin
“Derived from the Greek 'Olympos,' referring to Mount Olympus, home of the Greek gods in classical mythology. Olympia conveys grandeur, divinity, and intellectual aspiration—it was the name of the ancient sanctuary in Greece and has been borne by queens and cultural figures. The name feels both classical and contemporary, with an air of distinction.”
