Ocean Vuong
Poet, novelist, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, Vietnamese-American literature
Ocean Vuong (born 1988) is a Vietnamese-American writer, poet, and novelist who has emerged as one of the most vital literary voices of his generation. Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Vuong immigrated to the United States as a child with his family, growing up in Hartford, Connecticut, in a household shaped by the trauma and resilience of the Vietnam War. His debut collection of poetry, Night Sky with Exit Wounds (2016), announced an extraordinary talent for lyrical, emotionally precise language exploring themes of displacement, violence, sexuality, and family. His breakthrough novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (2019), structured as a letter from a Vietnamese mother to her gay son, became a bestseller and critical sensation. The novel's poetic prose style, unflinching examination of queerness and identity, and exploration of intergenerational trauma and love resonated deeply with readers worldwide. Vuong's work is characterized by its linguistic beauty, emotional honesty, and refusal to be categorized—he writes across genres, blending poetry and prose. His second novel, The Committed (2021), continues his exploration of displacement and belonging. Vuong's career represents the possibilities of immigrant narratives and queer literature to achieve mainstream recognition and critical acclaim while maintaining artistic integrity.
